How we help

We can support you financially, offer advice and signpost you to a host of partner support organisations. Together we help you get things back on track.

In situations where you have low or no income from work.

The Solicitors’ Charity’s support depends upon varying factors. If your income is low because you are out of work, on shorter hours or work opportunities are reduced due to COVID-19, we can help maximise your chances of sustaining yourself in the long-term.

If your income is below the relevant MIS calculation, we may be able to provide you with financial support. Depending on your circumstances, our awards can be made for varying periods of time and are subject to regular review.

We also help with exceptional costs relating to health and wellbeing, including nursing and residential care fees as well as home adaptations or aids.

We can also refer you to a variety of services designed to help you get back into work including those geared around practical career and job search support, more information here.

For advice on personal debt.

We understand that debt is a challenging subject for solicitors and there are times when overwhelming debt needs serious measures. The Solicitors’ Charity can refer solicitors from across England and Wales for confidential advice on managing personal debts, provided by telephone or email by experienced personnel at CAM (Citizens Advice Manchester).

Sometimes, we can take care of certain priority debts (e.g. Council Tax arrears) if clearing them once will bring household finances back onto a permanent even keel. However, we will not clear this type of debt twice and to be eligible for this service, your income still needs to be below the relevant MIS calculation.

For advice on welfare benefits.

We want to make sure that applicants have applied for all the statutory benefits they are entitled to. This can be a difficult maze to navigate, especially if it’s the first time you’ve found yourself in this situation, and why we refer individuals for confidential advice on welfare benefits. This service is also provided by experts at CAM. Email our caseworkers to find out more via
